Let’s talk about Inquiry-Based Learning, Standards-Based Education, and Thematic Teaching

This video was made in response to a number of questions I’ve been getting around the difference between inquiry-based learning and thematic teaching.  To keep the video short, I described things a little crudely, but the fact of the matter is, you could spend many years studying any of these topics and still not know everything there is to know about it.

    In Inquiry based learning, are teachers only working with questions that the children come up with or do they ask premeditated questions too. I know that we aren’t working towards a list of standards, but there should be a gain of valuable knowledge to some degree in the process, right? I am sure that there usually is.

      I’m sure other educators might differ in opinion here, but I firmly believe that education should be negotiated. What I mean by that is nothing should be purely child-lead and it shouldn’t be purely teacher-lead either. Some lines of inquiry will come from the children. Some lines of inquiry will come from pieces of inspiration, or “provocations,” that teachers bring. The key is that children make meaning of the world actively, and aren’t passive recipients of information. Since that’s the case, we ought to teach children to find their passion and dig deep into their work.
